iPhone 17 Pro Lost a Camera Feature We’ve Been Using Since 2020 — And People Are Not Happy

The iPhone 17 Pro is supposed to be the next-level upgrade in Apple’s Pro camera lineup.
Bigger sensors, faster processing, better low-light performance… all the good stuff.

But here’s the weird twist:
Night Mode Portrait is gone. 🫠

Yup — that cool feature that lets you shoot bright, blurry-background portraits in dark places? It’s not on the 17 Pro anymore. A feature we’ve had since the iPhone 12 Pro suddenly vanished on a much more expensive phone.

Let’s break it down.

🔍 Try It Yourself — It’s Not a Bug

If you have an iPhone 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max, do this quick test:

  1. Open Camera → Photo

  2. Cover the back lenses with your hand
→ You’ll see the Night Mode moon icon

  3. Switch to Portrait

  4. Cover the lens again
→ Night Mode icon completely disappears

No toggle. No option. Nothing.

Do the exact same thing on an iPhone 16 Pro or older Pro model — Night Mode Portrait still works perfectly.

So no, your phone isn’t broken.
Apple actually removed the support.

✔️ These iPhones Can Still Use Night Mode Portrait

According to Apple’s latest user guide, this feature is only available on:

  • iPhone 12 Pro

  • iPhone 12 Pro Max

  • iPhone 13 Pro

  • iPhone 13 Pro Max

  • iPhone 14 Pro

  • iPhone 14 Pro Max

  • iPhone 15 Pro

  • iPhone 15 Pro Max

  • iPhone 16 Pro

  • iPhone 16 Pro Max

Notice who’s missing from the list?

That means it’s not an accident — Apple intentionally cut it.

😬 Why Would Apple Remove Something So Useful?

Here’s the most likely reason (in plain English):

Night Mode photos on iPhone are processed at 12MP using long exposures.
Portrait photos on the iPhone 17 Pro are now 24MP by default.

Apple probably hasn’t figured out how to merge:

  • high-resolution portrait depth data

  •
  • long-exposure low-light image stacking

…without wrecking image quality or performance.

So the feature is temporarily sacrificed while Apple transitions to this new photo pipeline.

Translation:

The camera got smarter, but the algorithms haven’t caught up. 😅

🧁 Final Thoughts

✔ iPhone 17 Pro camera is more advanced — no debate
✘ Night Mode Portrait is missing
📍 A feature that existed on five Pro generations before it
🤷‍♂️ Apple hasn’t explained why
⌛ We’re hoping for a comeback via update

Right now, for low-light portrait lovers…
this definitely feels like one step forward, one step back.

If Apple wants to keep calling this the ultimate “Pro” camera experience, they better have a good explanation — or something even better coming soon.
